... ain't the problem that the stress is on the JA but that the NA is a long syllable - and this is difficult for native English speakers to handle...

Sotrr mercs, I went for a post AA-nap and I'm due out jolly shortly ::

      If K = 279, then L = 366

      If K = 280, then L = 388

      If K = 281, then L = 378

      So what is L?

Well that would be provocatively silly and complex, almost worthy of our prickly friend, as neither begins with L, which is the subject of the puzzle.

However, you may have a serious or pertinent point to make

... sorry, Amms - I think I was on the wrong track.

            For me
            K279 is L468
            K280 is L237 and
            K 281 is L 56

            .
            as you were

... oh, they're just the Longo equivalent of the Kirkpatrick numberings of the Scarlatti sonatas. If you want the equivalent Fadini or Pestelli numbers of the same sonatas, just ask...

You're right about Longo, but not about Kirkpatrick

Extra clue - the three Longo numbers refer to what pieces by Scarlatti? Does anyone else write such pieces with a K number?

L366, 388, 378 are the first three on this list

                      i.e. K1, 2, 3 - so should we look for someone else's K1, 2, 3 or someone else's K279, 280, 281 (as per the question) ? I guess we mean Mozart

a question worthy of Bletchley Park

I thought this might be too straightforward, building as it does on merc's earlier puzzle exploring Kirkpatrick's catalogue. however the twist is that in this puzzle K refers not to Kirkpatrick's catalogue of Scarlatti's work but to Köchel's catalogue of Mozart's work.

To protract this in search of exactitude would be unsporting ...

Both Mozart and Domenico Scarlatti wrote piano sonatas and this puzzle refers to nos 1-3 in each case:

                        Piano sonata no. 1 Mozart K 279 Scarlatti L 366

                        Piano sonata no.2 Mozart K 280 Scarlatti L 388

                        Piano sonata no.3 Mozart K 281 Scarlatti L 378

                        Simples ... when you know

In fairness vinteuil got to Longo and so must be awarded the prix d'honneur and the chance to give us an M

Clever? I think 'magicians' refer to this trick as 'distraction' or 'diversion', mercs
