Perhaps not very cryptic, but it's all I can think of.

What "H" connects Beethoven, Boulez and The Beatles?

That has to be it! Well done rubberknockers.

Took about 30 secs, and no googling! Probably wrong...

            Yes, well done, rubbernecker.

In retrospect I could have dressed it up a bit - What "H" did Beethoven have 2 of (if one includes op 101), The Beatles have 1 of, and Boulez none at all?

            Over to you for "I"...

Which I lost her French roots after being tampered with by Wagner and ended up in Crimea?

                      That's better. Can you elaborate?

Gluck's "Iphigenia in Aulis" was first performed in Paris, Wagner tampered with it by making his own version (including adding newly composed bits and changing the ending). Gluck's "Iphigenia in Tauris" is set (funnily enough) in Tauris, Crimea.

Took a bit of googling, this one!

Very good, 2 out of 3. You missed the cryptic reference to Racine (French root), on whose Iphigenie Gluck's librettist based the first opera. I perhaps thought Vinteuil would have spotted that quite early on.

Anyway, back to you for J.

                            Erm… why 'none'?

It was the 'Marteau' which was 'sans Maître', wasn't it, rather than the 'Maître' being 'sans Marteau'…? Or am I being dim? (This thread doesn't half make me doubt my mental capacities)

Good clue. Pity I only saw it after it had been solved. Damn work, distracting me and using up brain cells....

I had exactly the same thought! Let us stumble in the darkness together until enlightenment comes..
