The Fool - a play by the English playwright Edward Bond. It traces the life of the poet John Clare against the backdrop of the Industrial Revolution, from his roots in rural East Anglia via literary success in London to his final years in a lunatic asylum.

And then your Ivan the Fool by César Cui

      Fantastic!

... as propmted by Molesworth and Edith!

Up to you to Gee Whizz us all next!

(Oh, and Bond's play was originally published by Methuen together with his libretto for Henze's opera We Come to the River. Not a lot of people kno that.)

          Indeed, the standard is high.

            Agreed!
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
            Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

I return ashen-faced to search for and direct this F: George crystallised a great work from his noted programmes; Tommy the Elephant wrote words to a Welsh ditty; I Hope the third had many a round at The Phil.

Two singulars and a (sort of) plural.

With the limited mental resources available during the working day, I've found no toe hold on this puzzle, save that there's a pub on Hope St in Liverpool called The Philharmonic.

                      Irrelevant I s'pose?

I'd need clues to get any further but maybe others are burrowing away contentedly and don't need them...

No, very relevant, (hence the capital H in Hope....) Now who might have had many a chance for a drink there? (Assuming he was a drinking man: his charming demeanour and slight portliness suggest to me that he would have enjoyed a pint). My preamble might have provided some direction...

No he isn't. He was born somewhat earlier
