I'd found a M. Marrast who was a French bigwig and present at one of Berlioz's concerts held at Versailles. After Googling Walther Marrast, it comes up with Walther Straram (an anagram!) but as a violinist.

In desperation I thought that Elphinstone was a misdirection and that it was the English version of the French "Elfin Stone".

Would it be Countess Emily Jane Mercer Elphinstone de Flahault ?

              Straram premiered Ravel's Boléro

I had the original French document that described him as a violiniste!

No, it was a bloody good question...very tough but still good.

I'd like a C to link a factory in London, races in Spain and a Catalan

I know that inherited titles are ridiculous - but, still, I shall miss a certain picturesqueness when all the hereditary titles are gorn...

PS - when Chopin dedicated his Bolero to her in 1834 she was Emily Jane de Flahaut. It was only in 1843 when she married Henry Petty-Fitzmaurice that she became Countess of Shelburne - and only in 1863 did she become Marchioness of Lansdowne...

A good question...you spotted my attempt at misdirection...in the context of cycle races.

sounds like you're quite familiar with Felix
ah, was that the cat reference ??

While compliments are being flung around, could I add that I thought that W was an excellent question too. I got the answer of Felix Weingartner but was being hasted out to my pub quiz night obligation (we won so it's free drinks next week! ), so I could not post it. The cat/vinteuil/Garten reference was purrfectly awful, and I apologise for it.
