Put your question on a postcard, please, to Osmo Räihälä, Everton Supporters' Club, Finland.

Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
    Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

At least he didn't say that Everton can't play for toffees....'P' on its way (so to speak)

A 'P', please, to link Grétry, Walton and Smetana. All elements are musical, and the order of the clues is also relevant.

Highlights added, as per Anna's request! The order in which the composers are named was decided by the subjects of the relevant compositions, who are not themselves musical, but who are all examples of 'P'.

the only common factor I've found so far is Kings Richard which obviously isn't a P and in the case of Walton and Smetana is Richard III, so a non-starter
I assume this is Andre Gretry

just letting you know I'm thinking

You have identified the relevant Walton and Smetana works. And yes, its André Grétry.

oh - this is where my knowledge of English history comes a cropper

                  so Gretry's Richard Coeur-de-lion, Richard I, Plantagenet ?

if the Walton and Smetana are both Richard III, why does the order matter, I ask myself

Yes, the three composers named wrote works featuring Plantagenet monarchs.
I had Henry V in mind for the Walton, hence the historical word order.
On we go to 'Q', or 'R' if you prefer.

                        sorry for the delay
having embarrassed myself with the Plantagenets, here's a question I've done before

I think I can make the word Sessions fit, but it seems too straightforward for a cluffy question
