OK...let's join up the dots, if we can...
      We have:
Métropolitain (on which one travels, for example, from Porte de Dauphine to Nation)
      Laval (4-time French President)
Trois Rivieres (for example, Seine, Garonne and Dordogne)
What do these have in common, musically, in Quebec (where one of the official langauges is French)

Speaking as a mere spectator (this is all beyond my Saturday brain), this is a heck of a great puzzle, Northo!!

"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
        Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

I'll be back around 2245. I can't really offer any further help short of giving you the actual answer, but I have every c-c-c-confidence in you chaps (and chapesses!)

Three Quebec orchestras: L'Orchestre Métropolitain, L'Orchestre Symphonique de Laval, and L'Orchestre Symphonique de Trois Rivières. I think Anna's Law has already been complied with, so it's over to you for the 'R' which we know you have ready for us.

You know before I put computer aside earlier I almost put on a message to the effect that Q would still be on the go on my return. Funny old game isn't it. It's also pleasing that all those prophets of doom earlier in the year who doubted Jessica Ennis' chances all got it wrong!

                  trez cunning question Baldrick
I'm not well up on French politics. wikipedia describes Laval as President of the council of ministers. Is that the same as Prime Minister and not President of the Republic ? [an ignominious end to Laval but a name Canada thinks should be remembered ?]

I had an R ? oh yes, not at all cunning and I'm afraid you won't learn anything about Canada in the process

                  R linking

the last Apponyi, Bartley and Neruda

Does this by any chance have anything to do with rowing?

                      I wouldn't have said so

but I'm happy for you to prove otherwise

EDIT - I guess in one respect I suppose it depends where you do your rowing [which would be an unhelpful clue, best ignored]
EDIT EDIT - put it this way, not olympic rowing but possibly old-fashioned lifeboat rowing

                            Bobos = Bo Peep ?

Methinks an alliteration too far !!!

Question: Where did Beddie-byes come from, I wonder ?
