      Cimarosa?

      The Secret Marriage
Oboe Concerto for Lady Barbirolli (arr Arthur Benjamin)

... not sure about "plinky-plonk": "plinky" = "chimes"; "rosa" = "plonk"?

The rubberneckers rarely shop anywhere else, I gather...
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
              Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Cimarosa at Lidl. Becoming surprisingly popular with the green welly and Subaru crowd, so I gather...

Well done, Calibs, but fhg's turn for D.

The only other item of trivia I would add is that I remember asking Evelyn Rothwell (Lady B) on a visit to our school to sign my LP copy of Italian Oboe Concertos featuring the Cimarosa. Which she did, graciously, and I still have it.

                  Lucky you.

Which double D was an associate of Berio at Dartington, was responsible for John Peel presenting Top Gear, but is most famous for a piece accredited to another composer?

I thought of Cimarosa right away but didn't want the task of another letter so kept quiet. (Easy to say after the event!)

Anyway, I didn't know anything about the plinky thing and was thinking that the buffa would be Il Maestro di Capella.

                      Surely not Ms Parton?

Is 'Top Gear' the radio, rather than the TV, programme?

Has to be, can you imagine Jeremy Clarkson alongside John Peel? Mayhem!
Only thing I have come up with is .... was there trouble at The Proms?

The driving force (boom! boom!) behind the Radio 1 programme was, I believe, Keith Drummond (which is a kind of double D, I guess)

                              No, not Ms Parton!
... and neither the TV nor the Radio version of Top Gear: although the D concerned was probably thinking of the Radio version.

One of the works in the clue has been performed at Prom concerts.
