    The picture of Anderson in your link makes him look like the benign older brother of that David Evans, ludicrously known as The Edge.

        I will be offline shortly for a couple of hours or so. A clue before I depart?

          Really must run. There is a clue in my Msg 14627 reply to ferney...

          Also, the reference to Les Six alludes to one of their mentors...

            Would that be the Cocteau Twins by any chance?

              It would indeed, rubbers.

                And then, possibly, Men at Work? (ditto flying visit, v. early start in morning)

                    Time to move this one along, methinks.

                    A K, please, to link:

                    A flute solo which caused the ruination of a band
                    (Men at Work, as Anna has indicated);
                    A laptop;
                    A song by a (different) 80s band with indirect connections to Les Six (the band is Cocteau Twins, as offered by rubbers)?

                    The two follow-up clues: "by gum", "flying visit".

                    Anyone??

                      Think I'm there: The Dulmont Magnum is the laptop

                          ...also known as the Kookaburra, which is a track on the Aikea-Guinea EP by the Cocteau Twins and the flute solo in the (Land) Down Under is the children's song of the same name. Phew... that was hard work - for us men and women!

                            Yes. Men at Work lost a plagiarism case over their flute solo at the start of Land Down Under, which was deemed too similar to the "Kookaburra sits in the old gum tree" line of the children's song. In my view, a rather unfair judgement: I always heard the solo as "purposefully referential" to the original song, rather than a blatant steal.

                            Good work, rubbers; in retrospect a rather tortuous puzzle.

                            Let's get the L outta here.

                                Lawrence Power plays the viola; Lawrence Foster is an American conductor of Romanian ancestery - any use?
