      Fair enough.

      (But is a spinning wheel a "device"?)

        Let us wait for a verdict from the question setter.

          Yes. For the uninitiated (me), how does "Mélisande at the Spinning Wheel" - from Pelléas et Mélisande by Sibelius - represent a northern pensioner born in a grand duchy?

            When Sibelius was born Finland was a Grand Duchy within the Russian Empire. In 1897 he was granted a state pension, initially for 10 years, then extended to the rest of his life.

                NB seems to be missing in action, so, to move things on:

                A T to link:

                (a) a monastic bishop;
                (b) a very long serving cathedral organist (choice of two);
                (c) virginals.

                  Of course it's a device, a stutter is merely a verb Good question Norfy! Assuming all answers are correct of course.

                    Tomkins. (I like Bryan Adams even less now, if that were possible).

                      Right cathedral, try one who served even longer.

                                I think this could be Tickell? Tickell organ introduced recently to Worcester Cathedral. Kathryn Tickell and others have given performances of virginals.

                                If not, Three Kings.
