Nice puzzle, Norfs - enjoy Borgen

What I was a close friend of a scandalous conductor; was a member of a bunch of self-styled hooligans, also sounding like Native American Indians; and composed a piece for harp and orchestra in the Irish style?

Would this be scandalous as in an unfortunate incident at Sydney airport involving rubber goods and things for the weekend?

          Yes! Do tell... !
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
          Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

I refer of course to Sir Eugene Goossens and what is sometimes called the Sex and Magic scandal. I'm sure you are familiar with it, but if not I can do no more than reproduce the relevant paragraphs from Wikipedia:

In the early 1950s, Goossens met Rosaleen Norton, the so-called "Witch of Kings Cross". Norton was known as an artist of the grotesque and for her interest in the occult and erotica, which Goossens secretly shared. They conducted an intense affair, exchanging a number of passionate letters; although Goossens asked Norton to destroy all of them, she kept a bundle hidden behind a sofa.[2]

In early 1956, Goossens visited Europe, unaware that Sydney police were already in possession of his letters to Norton and photographs of her occult activities, which had been stolen from her flat by Sydney Sun reporter Joe Morris, who had infiltrated her supposed "coven". When Goossens returned to Australia on 9 March 1956, he was detained at Sydney Airport, following a tip-off by informants in London; his bags were searched by Customs officials, who found a large amount of what was then considered pornographic material, which included photographs, prints, books, a spool of film, some rubber masks, and sticks of incense.

Although he was not immediately arrested or charged, Goossens naively agreed to attend a police interview a few days later, where he was confronted with photographs of Norton's "ceremonies" and his letters. Faced with the evidence of his affair with Norton — which left him open to the serious charge of "scandalous conduct" — Goossens was forced to plead guilty to the pornography charges. He paid a fine of ₤100; more significantly, the scandal ruined his reputation and forced him to resign from his positions. He returned to England in disgrace.

He was a good friend of John Ireland which rather led me up a blind alley for a while.

Blimey, £100 was a lot of money in those days too.

              Not Ireland, as you say

Nor would there have been an Aussie equivalent of the Leveson Committtee to haul Joe Morris in front of to explain his public interest justification

                  Igor Stravinsky?
Close friend of Pierre Monteux, who conducted the riotous premiere of his Sacre?
Was a member of the Parisian group of Artists The Apaches?
Wrote the work for Harp & Orchestra O'Pheus?

odd the places the internet can take one, isn't it.

I've just been reading of the (family) relationship between B Sewell and P Warlock.

(probably old news to those of you hereabouts)

Mercia, you followed the clues & got where u've got - it's not what's on the card but there ya go

The answer is Désiré-Émile Inghelbrecht, who was a friend of Pierre Monteux who conducted the premiere of Igor's Rite of Spring. Inghelbrecht was also a nmember of Les Apaches (slang for hooligans, apparently) and he wrote a piece entitled Ballade dans le Gout Irlandais for harp and orchestra

Over to mercs for the J, I say!!
