Danish and Italian punk bands of the 1980s and 1990s respectively. Which, to paraphrase Keats (?), is all I know and all I need to know. (Actually, I think mercia should set the next question because he made the breakthrough and also, sadly, I have to attend a funeral later this morning and wouldn't wish to delay AA proceedings, not knowing when I shall be back and online).

Sorry to hear you have to attend funeral Norfy, hope it won't be too sad for you. I confess I had never heard of The Merchant Kalashnikov and not surprising as wiki says it's only been performed four times, ditto never heard of punk band of that name either. How mercia came up with Rubinstein is amazing and therefore I agree with you that he gets to set the L although he didn't mention the K word. We must wait to hear from him as to what he wants to do unless anyone else wants to pitch in?

For the record the musicologist was L F Kalashnikov, active in late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, specialising in traditional Russian Orthodox chant.
What every one seems to have missed was the clue in the first word of the original question.
We await an L of a question from mercia.
