the answer is Universe Symphony by Charles Ives, conceived in the Adirondack Mountains, making use of a "slab of marble" in the percussion section and quoting the hymn tune Bethany

well what can I say, it passed the time in a not very comfortable way .......... poor ammie

      Mercia has saved your afternoon!

I thought it was a terrific question: perfect, mercia

I have a little wildcard M with sort of a connection to your U, in a sense, mercial...

      What double M connects:

      - part of a festive greeting

      - a theatrical battle-axe

      - a namesake of Humphrey Appleby's alter ego ?

(Don't let us keep you up, ammy! )
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
      Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Yours was gettable, I think! It was testing, true - but the mix of straightforward and less so is the spice of AA!

            Not a Nigel, amms

You seem to have set us on a somewhat winding uphill path.

No I loved the question and in my trawlings through wiki the U symphony had come up.
As we have said so often nothing is wasted my knowledge of the mountains of New York State has increased one hundred fold and I am quite up on Bethany and Lazarus - but as ever my marble let me down. The sheer never give up spirit of Am really does make one proud to be British....

                    } Cheers anton!

Typical of me - I know precisely the right questions to ask - just don't understand the answers
