The years concerned are 1954 in the first two cases and 1958 in the third - and yes, Basil Fawlty is the hotelier.

      I share your curiosity!

However I suspect the answer to be Malcolm Arnold, who wrote the music for 'Hobson's Choice' which was one of Prunella Scales's first film engagements.

Can't place the others for now tho I imagine one may refer to 'Bridge on the River Kwai'

Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
      Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

I think you're onto it, Cali! I was thinking of H's C, but didn't get further than Harold Brighouse and Charles Laughton. To follow up Prunella Scales, I then went chasing after Jane Austen - which got me nowhere!

Not sure but well done, element 3 is 'Inn of the Sixth Happiness' - score, M Arnold Esq.

'A closely-fought match this between caliban and mercia..which will track down the third, and decisive, Malcolm Arnold score?'

The other 1954 film was based on a novel whose author shared a surname with a famous pianist. The producer worked on the film under a pseudonym, having been blacklisted in the States.

Sam Spiegel, presumably - working as S.P Eagle...

Well the one we're looking for is 1954, you say - I can't make anything fit. Either it's not 1954 or you are seeing something I'm not. Help!!

How was Corrie? I shall do my customary weekend catch-up. Is Stephanie Cole back yet? Did you see that Becky is off, the actress Katherine joining the National Theatre company in January? There's posh!

The adopted pseudonym was Victor Hanbury, and the film starred Dirk Bogarde - AHA! mercia's just posted the answer , which by my reckoning (he'll be thrilled to hear) qualifies him to set the next question, if caliban agrees.
Three films from the 1950s for which Malcolm Arnold wrote the music.

Has he? I can't see it...

I only got what I did because of nudging by mercia about Fawlty and Donat... I suspect he will say I should do the B, though I agree that by rights mercs should do it!

Nor can I. Has he deleted the relevant post in order to avoid setting the B?

Haven't got the answer. And I'm still busy for an hour or two. Could you give the answer? Put me out of my misery ... and go on, Mercs... force yourself... give us a B!! I won't be able to for a good while. Just an interesting quickie to keep things ticking over...
