Well, I checked out 'Sharpe TV series theme music' and up popped Dominic Muldowney - who, I discover, was born in Southampton. The Pilgrim fathers sailed from Southampton, putting in at Plymouth (they'd run out of, or forgotten, something or other). Googling 'Earl of Southampton' proved interesting but inconclusive.

No need to apologize - it was an excellent question!
In which 'T' does Somervell come 2nd, Elgar 4th, Stanford 5th and Parry 10th?

ah, well I haven't found much information, but as an 80th birthday tribute to the old queen in 1899, 13 composers were asked to write part-songs, four of which she heard sung by massed choirs by hanging out of a window at Windsor Castle. The CD I've found which contains them all doesn't have them in that order but perhaps they were published together in that order ???
Somervell - With still increasing blessings
Elgar - To her beneath whose steadfast star
Parry - Who can tell with greatness
Stanford - Out in the windy west
