Home from work and I'm lost so far.
Tantalising, concise puzzle though!!!

Is there any fictional location better named than Grimpen Mire?"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Can't wait to find out if the linking "L" is the composer Loewe, "L" for Lieder, or the concluding "L" of the words Erl and Saul..."...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Well mercia's right that scb's clue is on one view very straightforward: "you have the answer" must mean that the L is "Lieder" as that is the only "L" word in the quoted extract referenced by scb. (And he says ferne has "one of the kings" - the only king in the quoted passage is Saul.) But somehow I fear it's not that simple.
