Bravo Don and Anton. The first and third clues are done.

The Horny pair share the same name. They might also have not used Music Cases, having got a brand new bag.

        Mercia:
James Brown is not only the godfather of funk, but also the name of a fine Horn player (remember his CfP disc of the Mozart Concerti with Arthur Davison and the Virtuosi of England?) and an Oboist/Cor Anglaiseur who regularly played with the Nash Ensemble and ASMF. There's also a fine composer of that name who wrote a splendid choral work The Baptism of Christ in 1980-ish, but, alas, I didn't think that would be a fair clue.

So, the answer is Brown (as was the chosen colour of the type) or (with extra energy) Browne one of the brightest stars in the constellation of composers found in The Eton Choirbook: a collection as much to be treasured as the Lindisfarne Gospels or the Book of Kells (to bring us back to Iona) IMO.

So: who's up for the B?

I guess there's Iona's brother too (if you want horn-playing Browns)

What an excellent and elegant question, Ferney! I managed to start thinking of island-related names (I got as far as Man and Wight... i.e. not very far); and got nowhere near getting your deft indication of the spelling difference in the Eton-connected answer. Simple when you know the answer, teasingly elusive when you don't: the ideal AA question! Like your style, Mr Hough!
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
            Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

And thank you, mercia for correcting my B error!

                Yes, C someone, please.

Ah well as I had a lucky dip in the Eton Choirbook

                  What C connects

                  Appropriately from Bristol to Newcastle
                  From Peru to Broadway
                  Time Away in Italy

Hmm. I'm guessing a Coltrane for one?

Alas no - but there is, you might say, a jazz element to one of the clues.

Another fuel transporter started in Peru, USA.

(I'm going out now, see you all later.)

Gone rather quiet here... I've been trying to get a finger-hold on this question but none can I find! Stumped, stymied and other sporting metaphors (stalled on the line... &c)

Don sort of cryptically got it with fuel transporter and we are now in that area of Night and Day

Very quiet. I did indeed mean Cole Porter for Peru to Broadway, and he did have a holiday in a palazzo in Venice, according to Wiki, which could be number three?
Not sure about one, except 'coals to Newcastle' coming into it. Why Bristol?

I'm going on a short trip starting this morning, and will only be in intermitent contact until home Wednesday evening. Will be looking in from the odd Wetherspoons, though (good excuse).

(Night and Day, but who is the one?)
