IIRC the Finale of Rachmaninov's FirstSymphony was used as the theme tune for BBC's Panorama in the '60s & '70s.

Pourquoi (to evoke the auld lang syne alliance): the clue referred to "Wallace, Smith and two others" with anton's later "nudge"; "rugby ... but not Wales or France". Harlequins is a London team whose members include Luke Wallace, Sam Smith, Ugo Moyne and Chris Brooker. These four players scored the only Tries in Harlequins' 42-6 victory over Gloucester on 17th Sept.

(I'd like to thank IE8 and Mr Google for their assistance in uncovering this information. Sadly messrs IE8 & Google were totally useless in offering any suggestions as to how said information had anything to do with everything else in anton's puzzler!)
