    Sorry if I was ambiguous (though I'm not sure I was ). Hans Sachs is indeed the answer to (i): the shoemaker. (Neither he nor the answer to part (ii) of the question has anything to do with Le Carré)

    You need an "N" to connect Hans Sachs with the other 2 elements

    Angle has uttered the name of the fictional secret agent in question - but the connection isn't 'Nose".

    Look for a musical connection.

    Further clue: you're looking for two English people and one American.

              Last clue for the day - maybe one of the early birds will get it... The N you're looking for is (i) the first name of an Englishman connected with Hans Sachs (ii) the surname of an Englishman connected with James Bond and (iii) the surname of an American woman.

                Monty Norman seems to have written the James Bond theme
                Norman Bailey was a memorable Hans Sachs
                And did Jessye Norman do Joshua fit/fought the Battle of Jericho?

                  Yes to all of that with a caveat about Jessye Norman which doesn't affect your entitlement to the "O" - I was thinking that Jessye famously performed Spirituals with Kathleen BATTLE at Carnegie Hall (and elsewhere no doubt) as evidenced on video...

                  Incidentally, by way of a tangent, both Monty and Jessye were involved in memorable musical libel actions late last century: Monty sued The Sunday Times over claims that the Bond theme had in fact been written by John Barry (a trial including musical analysis from Stanley Sadie as expert witness etc etc) while Jessye sued 'Classic CD' magazine... They had retailed a story about her getting stuck in a revolving door and (when it was suggested that she should release herself by turning sideways) allegedly replying in a 'caricature' Black voice "Honey I aint got no 'sideways'!!". Her claim that it branded her with a racial stereotype was struck out by the Court of Appeal without going to trial - a very expensive failure which brought a tiny specialist article to hugely wider prominence: a classic instance of a misconceived libel action. Whereas Monty was successful in asserting his authorship of the Bond theme and was awarded a five-figure sum in damages by the trial jury.
