Well, that's put me right off any thought of Sachs.

Well it's not N-N-N-Nuremburg.... but Hans Sachs is the answer to part (i)
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
          Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

No idea on the other two. It was just a random thought. (Well, not really random - I quite often think of it.)

Would it help if in element (ii) I specified "fictional secret agent" ?

                  Not Neccesarily.

(Not my suggested "connection", by the way! There's a Connie Sachs in Tinker, Tailor ... . Any point persuing?)

Shouldn't you have added a Smiley?

Well, when out of one's depth with the matter in hand, keep the glib comments rolling ...

                            I do so agree!

Ferne, sadly nothing to do with any Le Carré character.. (though the Sachs connection is an inspired connection which had eluded me).

But in #9215 you said 'Hans Sachs is the answer to part (i)'?

Now I'm really Confused of Tunbridge Wells ...

One of Hans Sachs' Nine Carnival Plays is THE NOSE DANCE

Then there was a film: a Bond spoof : THE SPY WITH THE COLD NOSE

Cannot do anything else with this, Caliban, sadly. This is another sniff around the wrong tree.
