We're looking at different renditions of the same musical item. As you might imagine, the non-musician was probably miming.

OK - so my attempt to pass it off as French failed!

Flanagan and Allen: The Umbrella Man
              Kay Kyser: The Umbrella Man
Michael Gambon: Tales of the Unexpected – The Umbrella Man

Now what follows U in this game? Shall I try for V?

What V connects a 1960s pop group with a royal six and an opera by Vaughan Williams?

Three out of four, Dave, which is certainly enough for you to set the 'V' question. The missing element was Michael Gambon's singing/miming of 'The Umbrella Man' in 'The Singing Detective'.

a wild guess - Valiant? (as in Valiant for Truth)
I'm assuming the royal six are Henry's wifelets

would love to know how Dave got into the U question, I might learn something from the master codebreaker

Well, the first two letters are right! The "royal" is much more recent - hopefully the clue isn't too misleading. You are i think in the right VW opera.

Re U. Crazy Gang -> Flanagan and Allen (wikipedia) -> tried "under" and "underneath" (underneath the arches), then looked for "under" plus Kay Kyser, similarly for Gambon. Dead end, so went back to look at list of works by F and A, and hit upon umbrella. Then search again for "umbrella" with Kay Kyser, and also Gambon. Bingo - job done!

Yes I was going to say Valiant too, but couldn't make it fit either of the other elements in the question...
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                        Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."
