          ... well,

          a) if I recall aright, STC wd have been living at Nether Stowey in the Quantocks when he wrote the The Rime of the Ancient Mariner
          b) Tinker Tailor begins with Jim Prideaux at the Thursgood School in the Quantocks
          c) my knowledge of the Å“uvre of Half Man Half Biscuit is - quelle surprise! - limited: but they did have something to do with Bridgwater...

'Checking out the Quantocks', is a line from the song Joy Division Oven Gloves by Half Man Half Biscuit from their album Achtung Bono!!!

            Very well done vints.

            You R off and running!

                ... okely dokely.

                An R -

Following on from Jeremy Hardy's contribution to the I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue demand for ornithological chat-up lines (his involved a dozen small birds... ) -
why might this lead to a porter and a weaver?

so do we need another word for porter and/or another word for weaver?
is it a Mr Porter e.g. Cole? or a Mr Weaver?
                  is the number 12 important?
are finches important? are birds important?
will the eventual answer be the name of a composer?

                    birds unimportant.
the answer is not the name of a composer.
it is something (two different things) - sung by one and written by the other.

anything to do with folk quartet The Weavers?
                      or Sylvester Weaver?
                      or Paul Weller?

                        ... none of the above.

Apart from 'a foot', what else might twelve finches make you think of?

regrettably, apart from Charles Darwin and his finches, nothing at all
EDIT: on the other hand, 12 inches might make me think of an LP = R-R-Record
I think I might leave this one to my colleagues

I'm now wondering if I've lost the plot (likely) or whether the R setter has!

I thought the answer would be Respighi, who wrote The Birds.
Peter Porter wrote a poem called the Pines of Rome. http://www.poetryarchive.org/poetrya...do?poemId=1713
I thought William Fense Weaver might have something to do with this too.

Probably just completely off track though.

Now we know it can't be Respighi, as not the name of a composer.

the "porter" song is maritime in nature

the other - "weaver" (?) - piece is more etherial

the titles of both pieces begin with R

Silas Marner is the Weaver of Ravelo and it's an opera. Weavers are also finches. That's about it from me I'm afraid!!
