did you know/read the funny anecdote about the Butlin's concert?

At the age of seven Anatole Fistoulari conducted Tchaikovsky's Pathetique Symphony in his home city, Kiev. Thirty years later, in 1944, he was appointed principal conductor of the London Philharmonic Orchestra, celebrating his marriage to Anna Mahler by directing her father Gustav's Fourth Symphony. He had a contract for 120 concerts that year. It seemed as if his career was made.

What a cracking obit, thanks! One reads it and wonders whether it's not a spoof, until one remembers that Fisty did indeed marry Mahler's daughter...
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
              Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Can't play your clever game but great to read about Fistoulari. He came into the music library in the 40s and 50s and always spread his arms wide and said "ME, I am Fistooooolari". A great character.

                Excuse intrusion please

Rachmaninov, concerto 3, Ashkenazy, Fistoulari, LSO.

I think the other parts have already been addressed in the website pointed out.

Hello. I am back, after sampling the fleshpots of the South Coast. Goodness, from first glance, it's been busy and quite esoteric. Oh, I see merce has updated the AA list, well done! What has happened to rubbers, has he fallen off his velocipede again?

Ams, Brighton. Home of the psychotic seagulls and, the Gay Capitol of the South. Anyway, tremendous fun. I came back with a Jarvis Cocker (bought at a market for £2) and some Halva. And a tan. And, oh, I met the grandson of the songwriter who wrote Nellie the Elephant and Run Rabbit Run and half the Gilbert & Sullivan chorus boys!!
