        Nicolas? Nicolas Maw was one composer responsible for one of the variations.

            And William Alwyn wrote an opera, called Miss Julie (and also a suite), and there's a 1945 film called "A Song for Miss Julie" - but no "N"?

                  Nice one, Dave - I just drew the same conclusion.

                  But how does that fit in with Alwyn's opera (Miss Julie) and Mahler symphony no 2?

                  As always I remain,

                  Yours perplexed

                    should we be concentrating on any particular version of Miss Julie? after all it comes in many different guises
                    or perhaps this is a sneaky, nothing to do with Strindberg, just an unmarried woman called Julie

                      it is a specific version of Miss Julie and not the most famous - getting the right "version" also applies to another bit!

                        Miss Julie is also an opera by Ned Rorem

                          I shouldn't think SBV exists in more than one version
                          Mahler 2 (unless it's another Resurrection) is in different editions I think, plus Totenfeier

                            Am51 had the correct Julie

                              Anyone else call symphony by that name?

                                Well I've googled 'Resurrection symphony' and looked through the first 25 pages of results and found no Resurrection symphony other than that by Mahler (out of 5,230,000 results )

                                As to Miss Julie there's yer ....

                                * play by Strindberg

                                * opera by Alwyn

                                * opera by Ned Rorem

                                and sundry fillums.

                                How'm I doing?

                                [can you believe that my next door neighbour has chosen the hottest day of the year when everyone's windows are wide open trying to catch a cooling breeze to start knocking seven bells out of something solid with a hammer ]
