    Heavens. That's was a fast one, Mercia. It looks as if congrats are in order.

      Guido's going to exhaust himself if he keeps that up

      What D

      served in the Franco-Prussian war, married a Scottish lady and suffered from neurasthenia?

            Nor this (but you might...):

            What E connects these four:
            - A Mussorgsky tableau;
            - Chopin/Fokine;
            - Montag's chariot;
            - Henze/Ashton ?

              I've got a patent opposition to keep me occupied for the next few hours (this afternoon's topic: authenticity verification products), so I'll leave it to others to enliven your conversation.

                getting nowhere fast with this
                so far I've got Pictures at an Exhibition, Les Sylphides, a fire engine and Ondine
                not sure the first two are right because it looks as if I may have the four elements
                earth, wind/air, fire and water

                EDIT a sylphide is an air spirit?
                EDIT a bare mountain is earth sort-of? whether you spend the night there or not

                  You're getting very warm but still a few degrees below Fahrenheit 451. Some specific creatures are involved...

                      At least they sound more interesting than industrial lubricants. Good luck!

                        Oh yes, most of it. All the references are correct, although you need to be specific about which Mussorgsky tableau, and the name of the fire engine, by which time the actual E word I was looking for should become clear - although 'element' is indeed an element !

                            The wikipedia page on Fahrenheit 451 will not give the answer, sorry

                            For Mussorgsky, go back to the gallery...

                              Just looking in for the first time since the crack of dawn and see we have zipped from A to E in record time with fast and furious volleys!! Any chance of an updated list rubbers?

                                Yes, it's been fast and furious and I was hoping we'd reach the end of the alphabet before close of play today. Curiously Mercia seems unable to get his racket to this one to finish it off. In the meantime, I'll post a list up to the A of this round. Am I now forgiven for being waspish?
