I always thought SERENATA derived from SERA (evening), and described a piece of music to be played at that time of day (cf. 'mattinata').

              - derived from ‘sereno’ = calm

But, I've never seen a Michael Winner advert, that's why I was so puzzled, but what does he advertise? Is the advert famous? I should say I avoid looking at commercial tv because of the adverts and have only just now been turning ITV on as I have been sucked into watching Corrie because of this thread!!

Famous? Hardly. It's an advert for the online insurer Esure. (From the Italian 'Esure', meaning 'online car insurance' or ''serene evening' )

So obscure, in fact, that the Prime Minister quoted it t'other day!
