    Your absence along with Rubbernecker's led me to speculate about pasta dough....

    That boy's thighs are no good at all, Caliban! Evidence of great hairiness all over me pasta strands, like Mrs Brown's brazilian, I swear!

    Shall I attend to the 'A' or do you all have it 'in hand' as the Reverend Father McGillicuddy used to say?

      Please attend to A, amateur51. I, for one, am utterly bemused. I need a nap, perhaps.

            Many thanks!

            I'm assuming that it's musical too, so maybe something like Berio's Omaggio a Joyce??

                Charles Aznavour and Cathy Berberian (who married Berio) both had Armenian parents.

                  Might the noise come from a duduk? If so, the link could be that all three elements are of Armenian origin.

                    Vinteuil suggested that the noise had nautical connections:

                    "- a one-dimensional singular noise;
                    - Basil ('the Rat')'s Manuel singing about Her;
                    - a Joycean homage?

                    ... might it help if i said the first element was nautical and the third Italian?"

                    Ofca, it is surprising what one cannot see before one's eyes. I had read about the Armenian parents but did not make the connection. I'd be getting ready for a B if I were you, just in case.

                      Ofca is heading in the right direction - Charles Aznavourian and Cathy Berberian both Armenian. (From 1950 to 1964 Berberian was married to Luciano Berio - Berberian became Berio's muse both during and after their marriage. He deconstructed her voice in Thema (Omaggio a Joyce) (1958) and wrote his Circles (1960), Folk Songs (1964), Sequenza III for woman's voice (1965), and Recital I (for Cathy) (1972) for her.)

                      But duduks is not the way forward...

                      Now what other famous Armenians do we know....

                          Indeed yes!

                          - care to link him to my nautical clue: a one-dimensional singular noise??

                            Surely not One din or Onedin as it is more commonly spelt?

                              ... I'm afraid you're right - the one-dimensional singular noise I had in mind was indeed -

                              The One din Line

                              (groan).
