    What N links:
    - a trombonist from the 1920s and 1930s;
    - a TV panellist from the 1950s;
    - a singer featured in a Shakespeare-inspired musical filmed in the 1960s; and
    - a character in an opera premiered in the 1980s?
    (One of the four is, as you might suspect, not music-related, but - to quote another panel show - ' 'The Name's The Same').

      Ah! At last, one I can pounce on... Partly because I saw David Nixon on a retrospective about Tommy Cooper the other day and remembered he'd been on "What's My Line"

      So it's Nixon
      - Teddy Nixon
      - David Nixon
      - Marni Nixon who did the vocals for Natalie Wood's 'Maria' in West Side Story
      - Nixon as in China...
      "...the isle is full of noises,
      Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
      Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
      Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

        My Lord?
        Yes, what is it, Baldrick?
        It's Caliban...
        What about him?
        Well..he's pounced, like a - like a...
        Like a pouncing thing, Baldrick?
        Er...yes - and he's got the right answer.
        Well done Mr. C!

          By the way ofca, unusual BBC prominence for this story: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-13117674

          O! I now have a question to set, don't I... O.K. here it is. An O unites the following:

          Nameless, I am at work, more and more.
          "...the isle is full of noises,
          Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
          Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
          Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

            Perhaps she's going to take over at the Queen Vic.
            There were some cracking jokes in Monday's 1930 episode, of which this is arguably the best:
            Kevin I was going to offer you a lift to the hearing.
            Sally I'd rather be driven by Stevie Wonder.
            Stephanie Cole has settled in very quickly as the latest Weatherfield battleaxe and looks like being a valuable addition. When asked to sit down as she was looking tired, she replied: 'I said I came on the bus - I didn't push it'.

              Very very good. Stephanie Cole is a class act anyway! Hope for many more put-downs like that!

                I hadn't realised that Stephanie Cole was in EastEnders.

                She was magnificent with the equally glorious recently departed Graham Crowden in Waiting for God - what a team

                  Ammy, old fruit: it's not 'Stenders, it's Corrie!! She turned up only last week. She plays the lugubrious Roy Cropper's mum... both with downturned mouths that made them alarmingly (and amusingly) convincing as mother and son

                    Ooops scuse I!

                    Now Roy is married to the woman (I use the term in its broadest and most modern sense) called Hayley, issit?

                    Don't want to upset some of the more tender souls on here.

                    Roy has a face like a seed cake that's been divided up with an axe?

                        Here we have three masses by Ockeghem:
                        Missa sine nomine
                        Missa Au travail suis
                        Missa De plus en plus

                        He also wrote a Mass called Mi-Mi, but sadly not one called Les Beaux Pantalons, or smartypants...

                            Because you came out of nowhere to snaffle that one, smartar**...

                                I shall forthwith return to my primordial sludge, but not before laying this before you:
                                What P -
                                - describes an astrological curtain raiser;
                                - is a supposedly angst-ridden symphony;
                                - is shared by both a pop group and their 1975 hit?
