    And Quest by Cage (1935).

Aside: Does anyone remember the (late 70s?) American Western drama The Quest, about 2 brothers in search of their abducted sister? I loved it.

Aside 2: I was forced to read Spenser's Faerie Queen as an undergrad. Others may disagree, but I can confidently say that it was among the most unutterably dull books I have ever read.

... at least you didn't (perhaps) have to read Sir Philip Sidney's Arcadias ... or Milton's Paradise Regained ...

You're right, vinteuil. No Sidney on the syllabus though Milton's Paradise Lost was. I shall make a mental note to avoid the former! I have to say that Milton and I never really hit it off either.

            All right then...

Now to a slightly cryptic “R”, which encompasses three clues across the olfactory, cinematic and musical media. One word answer.

            Wednesday’s fragrant violinist.

EDIT. I should add that the answer is a name.

Impressive happenings this morning (I could make nothing of Q), whilst work dominated the agenda... Rubbers seems to be otherwise detained too.

I completely share the Milton antipathy since trying to feign interest in 'Samson Agonistes' at school

Meantime a teasing and admirably concise new problem
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
              Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

                Good morning, everyone.

I have escaped for a minute from visitors who seem to have been here for ever and am unlikely to be back until I have recovered after their departure,

Is this R likely to have been found in bits and recovered by Shostakovitch. Can I bank on it ?

                  Angle,

                  Commiserations on your guest issues!

I like your way of thinking over the R, but, alas no, it's nothing to do with Rothschild or his fiddle...

Sorry, was detained by work. Taps was correct with Cage and Crumb and gets bonus points for actually having a recording of the Crumb.

He also gets a gold star because I agree that trying to read Spenser's Faerie Queen was the most mind-numbing experience of my undergraduate life, let alone trying to find something interesting to say about it.

Olfactory and fragrant immediately has me thinking of a rose - by any other name?

Perhaps you could pursue that line of thought, rubbers (though I am unsure which angle you are coming from with it)?

[The only thing I can remember about Faerie Queen is some bint called Florimel who gets chased]

Perhaps I might clarify slightly by stating that the fragrant thing is not living.

Ok, so it's not Mary Archer, then

oh, I don't know. I always thought that The Perjurer's Wife looked a bit dead round the eyes. Maybe being married to such a literary titan does that to a person.
