- an opera by Spontini
- an oratorio by Mendelssohn
- an early opera by Wagner
- an orchestral work by Berlioz
Haha!! I think this is that musical quiz favourite, the jolly old Ophicleide!!
Edit: when I say 'favourite' I mean favourite of mine, as I have been wanting to set this ever since I set Serpent in the first round! I spotted then that the Ophi was used by Mendelssohn, Wagner & Berlioz. As a trombonist, people playing items of plumbing of various shapes and lengths is of peculiar interest to me.
To be precise:
Olympie by Spontini (had to look that one up )
Elijah and Midsummer Night's Dream by Mendelssohn
Rienzi (I think) by Wagner
Symphonie Fantastique by Berlioz.

Reason: Adding explanation of 'favourite' and detailed answer
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."
O Caliban - well done you! Correct in all details - (I did worry that my inclusion of Berlioz might make it too easy... )
Congratulations - and now for a P
I think I would have got it even without Hector - it was the Mendelssohn and Wagner connections which had stuck in my mind.
I have to leave this instant for lunch with someone. I shall cogitate on my bike as I ride through the wafting spring breezes and sunshine.

What five-letter monosyllabic P which rhymes with a word for songs that are sung in church is Caliban currently enjoying as we languish rudderless on this sunny afternoon?
Sorry, my mind is full of four-letter monosyllabics at the moment...
Sadly, I happen to know the person with whom Caliban dines as she was a mutual colleague of ours some 20 years ago.
Even more sadly, I realise that it will be some time even after his return that Caliban will apply his alcohol-enfeebled mind to crafting a question. I therefore suggest we amuse ourselves more profitably elsewhere in the interim.
