I nearly posted an A which has been prevsiouly encountered. I will have to change it as one of my clues is the same as a previous.

Half a moment, as Bilbo Baggins would say...

I'm only doing it on a temporary placement, I now relinquish the job and hand it back to rubbers! I just like to leave things tidy.

A hastily formed A; all three elements have operatic associations and only the merest whiff of crypto-nite:

            - An operatic archbishop
            - the presumed sole survivor of an operatic conflagration
            - the controversial butcher of a modern Russian opera.

            What is the common A?

Wow, I slip out for a coffee and it's been all go...! I agree with the 'duplication ok' argument. I tend to think 3 is the best norm for questions, but where there are obvious additional elements, there should be no bar on 4 or 5...

Narrow escape from ignominy, Taps, thanks to Anna's assiduous hot-desking in the archives department
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
              Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Narrow indeed Caliban. It was an A I had lovingly husbanded for quite some time without opportunity to use. Thanks to Anna for helping me to avoid a shameful self-banishment...

Dear oh dear. My enthusiam over-riding my mental capacity. I shall have to relinquish "A" to more worthy setter. I have discovered a fatal flaw in the question.

I could alter the question - and now have an accurate version, but I would need the arbitration of the duty officials.

Ah the blessed crossposting. I crave gracious indulgence for this underperforming wood spirit

                        - An operatic archbishop
                        - A melancholic artist
                        - the controversial butcher of a modern Russian opera

What is the A in common?

                        Ah, that sounds right now.

shall be offline for an hour and a half or so (meeting with The Man beckons...).

Oh dear - opera not my strong suit... Thinks.....

PS: Meeting with The Man??? Sounds sinister... or exciting depending on your outlook... Also reminds me of Johnny Cash's "When The Man comes around...", one of the greatest song lyrics ever:

And I heard, as it were, the noise of thunder: One of the four beasts saying: “Come and see.” And I saw. And behold, a white horse.

There’s a Man goin’ ’round takin’ names.
An’ he decides who to free and who to blame.
Everybody won’t be treated all the same.
There’ll be a golden ladder reaching down.
                          When The Man comes around.

The hairs on your arm will stand up.
At the terror in each sip and in each sup.
For you partake of that last offered cup,
Or disappear into the potter’s ground.
                          When The Man comes around.

                          ....

"...the isle is full of noises,

You are all such early risers. Can't keep up with that as, unfortunately for me, my sleep pattern shifted over the years and I am now not usually a morning person. Congratulations of solving Y almost completely:

Although the Young/Schubert fits the bill I had something a bit more obvious in mind: The Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra. Congratulations, mecia

                            A

The operatic archbishop could well be a Hindemith role: the Archbishop of Mainz. Fuller details later, unless someone else gets here before I have got myself going today.

I have someone in mind for melancholic artist but cannot thik why he should have been melacholic unless it is one of his works.

No thoughts about the Russian opera.

By the way Tapiola, you were the answer to a question in today's Radio 4 "Counterpoint" quiz conducted by the irritating Gambacchini.

There is no statue of Jung in Liverpool but there is a very low-quality bust set into the wall of a converted warehouse in Mathew Street. It replace
d a much better one which was either stolen or destroyed by vandals several years ago but I don't think that the City Fathers had anything to do with either installation The pride which some Liverpudlians take in Jung's dream is a little embarrassing, really.

Nice to read your reference to Lark Lane, Tapiola. It is not quite as vibrant as it was though I suppose there are still highs moments.

                            Welcome back to Caliban.

Aah, that J Cash song is an absolute classic Love it. And used to be a big fave of me dad's.

The Man heretowith my meeting has the potential to invoke similar feelings to the lyrics expressed in that song, though The Man in my own context is the personification of the faceless, branding-obsessed corporation which has become the norm in my sphere of work.

There is of course "Waiting for The Man" by The Velvet Underground, a song about a drug deal.

The Man this afternoon was actually early and the meeting passed off without major incident. :cool2:
