Oh, gosh, it should be Ernst, Richard and Poul will disagree, with this Z - I think. As in, not a fag-end!
(It's why I like poetry so much, grammar seems to be rather fluid there, I can cope with that )

I got side-tracked, thinking that Wolf-Ferrari's first name was "Ernst" (all this talk of "fag-ends"!) - are Ernst, Richard and Paul all composers?

They are all composers and I made a terrible typo: Poul is the least well known ( he's still alive ), Richard the most (he's been dead the longest). Associate a little - what z is not at the bottom of things?

zenith ? with all this talk of fags I wondered if the answer was zigarette. I did find an obscure connection between Ernst and zigarette (in a painting). Now we have POUL I guess it should be easier. I haven't started exploring yet.

Well done Mercia, ( as there is no fag- end smiley). Zenith is the name of a movement in a work of these two composers ( Krenek and Ruders) The third ( Richard ) is a bit more hidden ..... The opening text of an aria in an opera.

I do hope you won't be disappearing over the horizon having solved it mercia. Anticipating a new question!

There have been a number of pop bands called Zenith, but they seem to have all reached a nadir early on.
