This is a fleeting visit but can I supplement that idea with one I had, which matches in the "I" department, namely that the French part of the question may be Rameau's Les Indes Galantes which having been to it, features American Indians (from the South and North I seem to remember).
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
      Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

That was the only Sicilian composer I could think of, but discarded him as we have already had Indian as a solution.

Yes, it is. And I have no Idea at the moment. I suspect this is one of those puzzles, when the solution is revealed, we all go

Well, I may be wrong (I often am) but I thought the same answer couldn't be twice? But, Hey, I didn't make the rules! Which rules, of course, are made to be broken! Actually I really like that Rameau referred to above

.... I nip out to waitrose for half an hour - and you suddenly all crowd in with the answers!

Anna - I refer m'learned friend to the opinion I provided earlier (#2910 on page 291)...

                    So -

                    Sigismondo d' India (b Palermo 1582, d Modena 1629)
Purcell - The Indian Queen, with the wars between the Mexican general Montezuma and the Peruvian Queen Zempoalla
Rameau - Les Indes Galantes , portraying the Incas in Peru and the North American Indians interacting with French and Spanish colonists

I judge that mercia is the winner - as he has been several times recently! - and this time he really must set us a J

No, I don't have the master list, I merely updated it due to our Archivist being on hols. No doubt I shall get in trouble for that as well!
