    can't find any reference to Peru ever having been at war with Mexico, but I'm probably taking that too literally

      Wars of Independence? As I only know one composer from Sicily can I assume it's not a composer we are seeking but a common word/link and the question is musical?

      Btw, where is everyone today?

        A composer is part of the answer - you are looking for a common link between these three - that is to say, one composer, two works - all musical.

        Yes - where is everybody?

                I might take up Anna's Independence idea...

                Sicilian Vespers by Verdi, based on historical Sicilian Uprising against the French;
                Des Canyons de etoiles by Messiaen, based on American landscapes and written for the US bicentennial;
                erm...

                  sorry, Anna's 'Wars of Independence' is not a helpful hint.

                  In history, it is true that there might not have been a war between Mexico and Peru. But never underestimate the creative power of the artistic imagination! - in the work in question, Mexico and Peru are next to one another...

                    Hmmm...

                    The Mexico-Peru proximity: would this refer to Ernst Toch's Geographical Fugue?

                      Tapiola - I love the Toch fugue - but sorry, nothing to do with this clue/answer. You need to go back a few centuries...

                        Verdi wrote an Opera called Alzira which was set in Peru. Not a lot of people know that!

                            I am most intrigued by this one, though I will shortly be offline. I hope to check on progress a bit later...

                              Purcell's Indian Queen seems to have Peru and Mexico as protagonists

                                Your Melodiya set is evidently different to mine
                                And yours has the VC1 PLUS another 13th! Is it the legendary live premiere of Babi Yar? Recordings of this are like gold dust! I am truly amazed!
                                For those who may be interested the additional Shosta No. 13 I have is the 1962 live (Gromadsky) Babi Yar, as per link below (thanks to Tapiola for sorting me out re the link and for being a really helpful person)
