that's OK, go ahead and set your O, we can always double back (or even omit N)

To link with Mercia's M, you need an N who reflected on Blake, wrote scenes on Swift, and told the story of Egg.

thanks for posting a question ed. Very intriguing, it looks as if it ought to be straightforward, but so far hasn't thrown up any Ns for me

rightly or wrongly I'm assuming N is the surname of one composer who connects the three elements. Egg has given me Menotti and Herbie Hancock. Swift has given me Telemann. There are very many (William) Blake settings, I haven't found an N composer as yet.

I'm assuming this is William Blake and Jonathan Swift, but I could well be mistaken.

Do carry on with Bill & Jon, Mercia, but, maybe, egg rather than Egg.

Sorry about my slothful start to Saturday, I was abed, not behind our fridge.

Just to say Hello... I've been pondering on this but not successfully, so far...
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
              Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Me, too. I'm presuming that our N is a composer?

Yes, a composer who perhaps thought he'd found heaven on earth only for it to fall from grace.

Will it help to know that N was/is much associated with Grand Prix ?

I think its something by Fleetwood Mac that is the theme tune of TV Grand Prix (not that I watch)
apparently Maurice Jarre wrote the music for the film Grand Prix (1966)
I think a composer named Gary Noland may have written something based on Blake and Swift, but its hard to find details

In the world of Grand Prix, (should it be Grands Prix?), those for driving cars are a mere subset, mercia.

This is a composer who coincidentally has won a motorbike Grand Prix ? Sounds unlikely.
or do we mean there's another Grand Prix sport, televised with a theme tune ? I don't follow sport at all
according to this page there has been no composer winner of the Prix de Rome whose name begins with N

if this is anything to do with sport, I think you may have to give a clue as to which sport

I doubt if it has anything to do with sport. I suspect that Ed may be referring to a musical prize, possibly French (although the Prix Rossini does not seem to fit)
