    I have no particular connection with Manchester (although I did once have a girlfriend who hailed from Didsbury - or was it Withington?).

    For me, the main attractions of the programme are:

    - the deadpan Northern humour (not that dissimilar to - or should that be from? - the one-liners encountered in programmes from the US);

    - the razor-sharp dialogue used to deliver devastating putdowns;

    - the many examples of brilliantly written and acted two-handers, such as the one that featured Curly and Raquel coming to terms with the failure of their own relationship while the rest of the world celebrated the New Year; and

    - those characters who epitomise self-delusion, such as Julie, who dresses like a 1940s nanny and then wonders why she can't find, let alone keep, a man.

    - oh yes, and Sally Webster.

      Thanks for that Ofca, most enlightening to see it's the scripts and the characters rather than a nostalgic longing for the scenes of your boyhood. I did try it some weeks ago but someone posted (now I cannot remember who) that increasing the number of episodes increased the number of troughs as against the peaks.

      Edit: I'm no doubt wrong but I say "Ennui"

        OFCA: we were taught "Anewyh"... I have northern family roots and grandparents all watch the Street - but lately in fact I have a work-related reason for keeping abreast of events there

        I am very much lacking in inspiration as regards question setting. I have come up with a sorbet to refresh the palate before (perhaps) a heavyweight D

        What is the C in common between a Roman stage work ending in a visual love duet, the number 317, and Rita's Kabin?

        EDIT: the sorbet image is not a clue

            Rita's Kabin? Well, even I know that's Corrie! Now I suppose one of you Granada fans will tell me in Episode 317 something happened!

              Concentrate, Anna! And don't use abbreviations!

                So it's Coronation? With possibly The Coronation of Poppea?

                  No questions marks or 'possibly' about it, anton

                        Well, I was going down a different path altogether and wondering if Rita smoked Consulates or had appeared in Calendar Girls!

                        Edit: 317 is all to do with Julian Calendar, the Year of the Consulship of Gallicanus and Bassus. I just add this in case you think I have lost the plot.

                          wiki advises:

                          "Jean Marie Lucien Pierre Anouilh (French pronunciation: [ʒɑ̃.naˈnuj]; - not, as often mispronounced, [(n)aˈnwi]"

                          Perhaps Fr: Fr: can also advise?

                            Vint, there is a pronunciation thread, perhaps you could ask there?

                              There you go!

                              Coronation of Poppea
                              Coronation Mass
                              Coronation Street, I say, Coronation Street (*to be said in the voice of the late great Fred Elliott*)

                              And.... cue the original: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wf-wKmC2Z-k

                                Actually (can't be bothered to look up who wrote it), that clip, it's not a bad bit of music. Is Fred Elliott Billy Elliott's Dad?
