ah, I was misunderstanding thinking that Stepan and Stenka were two different people

great question, much better than my Q. This game is going to be hard work if only us two are playing.

I'd love to make up a threesome, but have to confess to being out of my depth amid so much esoterica

You are very welcome here, Northo. I think we are (or at least I am) getting quite oblique on AA. In the past the puzzles were simpler and solved fairly rapidly.

                    Are we trying too hard?

I think simplicity would be a virtue... Things are rather busy and when one can only look in for 5 minutes here or there, I find the really oblique puzzles prove impossible to grapple with, given the time and brain cells available! Call me a lightweight!

And anton's seems admirably clear... not that for the moment I have a clue as to the solution!
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                          Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

thanks for the question anton - don't know if it falls into northender's esoteric category - I think the Breakfast programme is reaching out to those who think all classical music is esoteric

                            I shall start thinking

I may be wrong but I think you, Wiki and maybe others will have little trouble.
Lovely, IMHO, piece of Ravel that I had had quite forgotten on Breakfast just now - quite sets you up for the day.......
