I jest, of course: 'tis the distantly beloved Brian John Peter Ferneyhough.

I have no idea! I'd guess that the seven instruments that the percussionist chooses act as a sort of Alphabet, with the "words" produced then "anagramized" throughout the piece. (Or it might have something to do with ahinton's atrocious pun that "'alph a bet is better than none"!)

There's a glorious youTube video of the composer taking a percussion masterclass with a student who really doesn't know what to do. Ferneyhough tries his best, sings the different lines, explains the tempo changes and keeps his cool as his student repeatedly fails to get what he's talking about!

        Want a G?

Stravinsky popularly; Bruckner finally; Haydn all the time.

            No.

Well, yes, they all are - but that isn't the required G.

It might help to mention that we're mainly talking symphonically here.

wiki says Koussevitzky commissioned Stravinsky to write something popular for orchestra without chorus but he came up with the Symphony of Psalms

I'm vaguely wondering if the word is God but I haven't thought it through

Struggling more than a little Ferney and mercs unless we mean JH writing "The End Praise God" at the end of the Journey?

you have it I think AG. This paragraph from wiki

Haydn was a devout Catholic who often turned to his rosary when he had trouble composing, a practice that he usually found to be effective. He normally began the manuscript of each composition with "in nomine Domini" ("in the name of the Lord") and ended with "Laus Deo" ("praise be to God").

not sure my Stravinsky is correct.

Yes it is. All wrote Symphonies "dedicated" to God - in Haydn's case, he added his thanks to everything he wrote. (And, as mercs instantly noted, Stravinsky's response to Koussevitsky's request for a "popular" piece for the Boston Symphony Orchestra'a anniversary was the gloriously cool Symphony of Psalms - because it was about "the people" praising God.)

We should hurry on - honours equally divided between anton and mercs: either of you hany hideas?

I suppose it depends on who found God first.......
