I have no idea! I'd guess that the seven instruments that the percussionist chooses act as a sort of Alphabet, with the "words" produced then "anagramized" throughout the piece. Haydn was a devout Catholic who often turned to his rosary when he had trouble composing, a practice that he usually found to be effective. He normally began the manuscript of each composition with "in nomine Domini" ("in the name of the Lord") and ended with "Laus Deo" ("praise be to God").

Yes it is. All wrote Symphonies "dedicated" to God - in Haydn's case, he added his thanks to everything he wrote. (And, as mercs instantly noted, Stravinsky's response to Koussevitsky's request for a "popular" piece for the Boston Symphony Orchestra'a anniversary was the gloriously cool Symphony of Psalms - because it was about "the people" praising God.)Originally posted by antongould View Post
