Save it for another puzzle, vinty: we'll all have forgotten it by then. As consolation, there is an Edinburgh connection with our Cagey character.

... but of course Embra is the Athens of the North, not the Venice of the North ! [:much missed DOH! emoticon :] [:too many glasses of meursault with easter lunch emoticon:]
I think, on the whole, I'd prefer "too many glasses of meursault" to getting an AA puzzle correct!

To the solution of the puzzle! (Ex-Chief Conductor of the BBCSSO, hence the Edinburgh connection vinty nearly made.)

So we're looking for a couple more Musical Volkovs. "Wise" - Old Testamently speaking - associated with conversations with Milstein, Brodsky and ... ?

Ah! The Wisdom of Solomon, indeed.

Someone else should finish this off as I cannot be here during the Bank Holiday.

So to resume we have Ilan Volkov, conductor of the Iceland Philharmonic conducted some Cage during Proms 2012 for the last element.

The first element is Solomon Volkov then - his "Testimony" was based allegefly on conversations with Shostakovich; and he presumably did a similar job those other coves...

And the second: Vladimir Volkov - bassist, and apparently one of the St Petersburg Duo http://www.avantart.com/music/volkov.htm As opposed to the FZ Partizan left back Vladimir Volkov http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vladimir_Volkov

Talking of ambiguity, there are several Venices of the North I now realise: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Venice_of_the_North

"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
            Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

.. I once visited Birmingham. My hosts, representing the city, made sure I was impressed by all I saw. They made the point that there were more canals there than anyone knew - that they were verily "The Venice of the North". They will be so miffed that they don't feature on Caliban's link!

              .
Europe - Birmingham: Venice of the North - A passel of towns are dubbed the 'Venice of the North,' but one town that supposedly has more miles of canals than Venice does not - Birmingham, England. but according to a NYTiumes article it's true - but the article quotes locals who lament the canal conditions, often...

Full House (and the W) to Cali; with Angle mentioned honourably in dispatches with a nod to vinteuil.

Sorry about the delay - bit of an unexpected day!

Angle I have been sidetracked, ferney having allotted me the W - but I don't think that's right... You winkled out the V for Volkov and I think you should set one now, if you are W-W-W-Willing!!

It was gorgeously melting, flavoursome and cooked to perfection, thanks for asking! The whole roasted garlic bulbs were also totally yumpticious as were all the other trimmings and fol-de-rols.
