the word "pot" has taken me bizarrely via Handel's Messiah to an Irish priest/conductor called John O'Brien

but I'm quite sure this is all irrelevant

In a bit of a rush this morning, I've got no further forward, down the B936 or otherwise...!
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
          Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Hmmm....humming chorus? Madame Butterfly.....Margaret O'Brien starred in a film about Madame Curie
            1. “Let the wedding be soon,” Madame Wu said. “The sooner the better,” Madame Kang agreed. “It is wrong to light the fire under an empty pot.” Fengmo did not ... From Pavilion of Women

            Probably none of the above....

No, it isn't. Sorry, the "hmmm" bit isn't part of the clue, it's just referring to the M. O'Brien is probably the "way in": a fictional character.

                  - I added the "fictional character" bit especially for visitors from the "Gay Marriage" Thread!

I've found an opera by Stanford called Shamus O'Brien, apparently there are O'Briens in Star Trek and Orwell's 1984

Now, to whom does that take you?

"capers and vapours" = dances and airs, or, rather, airs and dances?

Probably not so if following the 1984 line and if one does, at least one M if not two, of whom one was 75 at the time, are easily found. But "pot"?

Possibly. You might find "Capers and Vapors" useful (especially when associated with someone called O'Brien).

The required M was indeed 75 "at the time" of composition (but only 54 in 1984).
