Jawohl !! Care to flesh out the answer, to maintain the educational value of this esteemed thread? You have element 3, Strauss, and of course the overall "U" in question.

Only with what Wikipedia says - she was his favourite soprano and premiered 4(?) of his operas presumably with Countesses and daughters of counts? She can be seen on You Tube singing War Sehr but I have no German! Far from good enough in my view - in fact not V Good!

Yes, well chipped away Herr Gould.

In particular I was thinking of her singing at the respective premières of the title character in "Arabella" (Arabella is the daughter of Count Waldner) and of the Countess in "Capriccio" (that unbelievably gorgeous final scene!)

Oh, and Richard S referred to her as "the most true of the true" ("die treueste aller Treuen")

Good luck with "V" anton... We are at the fag end of the alphabet aren't we ??

Well done anton, great work on your part. I did look at it this morning and decided I hadn't a clue (generally anything about opera renders me clueless although, I must say I did enjoy Anna Nicole last night although, that's not really opera is it?)

Do you have rubbra's little list? The V's so far have been Viola da Gamba, Vasary, Venusberg, Venice, Vanishing Bridegroom, Victor

Do you think a time will come when no-one can think up something new?

                      A symphony by Brian's mate
A favourite of The Devil's Advocate and
Something Golden for Ben in 1966?

                        Vanity:

                        "Vanity" composed by Richard Barrett

Amazing Vanity is correct but was Barrett Brian's friend?

Further searching gives "Vanity of Vanities", a Symphony for Chorus (without orchestra) by Granville Bantock, friend of Havergal Brian.

Apologies, but that will have to wait until tomorrow afternoon.
