He's one of the names from the DG and Phillips catalogues I used to get from the record shop near home and pore through in my teens

I always forget he's a composer too... despite his occasional appearance as such on the AA thread!

Ah, we're full of beans today! I though hedgehog would know of Holliger's work (and, yes, I was thinking of the occasions I saw them perform the Lutoslawski Concerto written for them - strictly speaking, of course, he used to follow her onto the stage). And Cali supplied the Seven Songs, so coleslaw is all set out on one page.

Holliger's PHILLIPS coupling of the Mozart and Strauss Concertos was a bestseller in the '70s and '80s, as were his recordings of Albinoni and Zelenka. More active nowadays as a conductor - his compositions have gained increasing admiration since his solo career ended. Schneewittchen is a superb work (not a dwarf in sight!) and is available on ECM.

I think I'm right in saying that HH is the only woodwind soloist with whom Alfred Brendel has collaborated - they made a lovely disc of late works for piano & oboe by Robert Schumann (still available for largely silly prices but awaiting a re-release one day I hope)
