Spot on with Shostakovich, hedgehog, but I wasn’t thinking of Nabokov Jnr, as it happens.

OK, time to call it a day, I think. I was actually thinking of St Demetrius of Thessaloniki, an Orthodox military saint and patron of soldiers.

But I think RM did all the footwork, so over to you RM for an E.

great question & answer, and I would think an original D - in itself no mean feat

Thanks, merc. Actually you did start the ball rolling with the Shakespeare link, which I should have acknowledged earlier!

Annie Fischer and Willi Boskovsky were the first names that came into my head, but they seem to be dead-ends [nothing personal you understand]

LOL. No, they won't help you, I'm afraid.

Both are dead, if that helps. And we are talking classical associations.....no folk or jazz this time round!

Nothing to do with the descendants of J.S. Bach, is it? Wilhelm Friedemann his first child, Anna Philippiana Friederica Bach his eldest grandchild (I think!)? Too devious?

                    No it isn't.

As a further clue, Annie was a singer. Both she and Willi were German. The context of 'first' is significant for these two.

wikipedia tells me that Annie Krull (1846-1947) created the role of Elektra
