The two groups of four operatic roles all had the same voices - alto, soprano, tenor and bass

    As did the four singers.

Hmmmm well when the SATB came up the thought of woodwind did cross my mind then, but I dismissed it as too tenuous until your "puff" hint.

I haven't put any work into this puzzle so ahem, well the next letter is X which is more of a millstone than a prize .

Have to go away now until late this afternoon, may come up with an X by then, but if anyone else wants to jump in, be my guest!

... I think that it is permissible to skip X - and indeed Y and Z - and go straight to A on this thread. We're terribly lax here

            PS still don't get "woodwind"

Woodwind instruments can be described as falling into one of the four categories -alto as in alto sax etc

I am feeling particularly lax... a rather testing few days haven't left me with enough brain cells to tackle AA. Might we have an Anna's law summary of the last one, it seems to have been challenging The Forum's most agile minds for some time and I've lost track

Is this the same question as the one about Wotan, Oberon and yours truly...? and if so, how come?!
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Yes it is. First set of operatic roles were Brünnhilde (a soprano role), Siegfried (a tenor role), Wotan ( a bass role...well, some would argue bass-baritone at a push), Oberon (a counter-tenor or male alto). Similarly for the second set of roles.

Thus yielding alto, tenor, bass and soprano.

Thanks for that. I often go baroqu'ing up the wrong tree.

For those moments, I recommend a spot of choral Renaissance....

Ah just in time for an over the yardarm question:

What Y links a Cornish miniature with a twice set artistic libretto?

(I've done an X, so I thought I'd skip it, these last letters of the alphabet are the barrel scrapings from many languages anyway )
