Hmmmm well when the SATB came up the thought of woodwind did cross my mind then, but I dismissed it as too tenuous until your "puff" hint.

I haven't put any work into this puzzle so ahem, well the next letter is X which is more of a millstone than a prize .

Have to go away now until late this afternoon, may come up with an X by then, but if anyone else wants to jump in, be my guest!

Yes it is. First set of operatic roles were Brünnhilde (a soprano role), Siegfried (a tenor role), Wotan ( a bass role...well, some would argue bass-baritone at a push), Oberon (a counter-tenor or male alto). Similarly for the second set of roles.

Thus yielding alto, tenor, bass and soprano.
