      and a very long title
You are (it is superflous to confirm) upon very much the right track. Care to wander a bit further down it?
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
      Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Can someone explain to me why it’s called coleslaw? (In particular, the idea of a side-salad to the main dish, I get.)

Nr3 Messiaen Île de feu 1&2

These pieces are to be found in the work Etudes de rythme. The most famous piece in this set of four is
Modes de valeurs et d’intensités, which is often seen as the one which is to blame for Serial Music.
Thanks hedgehog for drawing the Messiaen to my attention, and which was coincidentally sitting on a table next to my CD player. At least I now have a good excuse to play it!

And I now have worked out how to google music associated with the South Pacific, while excluding South Pacific musical!

Kreisler brings immediately to mind the violinist Fritz Kreisler.
He composed a bit too, notably an operetta called "Apple Blossoms".

No idea about the Hungarian homage bit.

                Yup

                So:

Kreisler in the E.T.A. Hoffmann novel
                Kreisler composer of "Apple Blossoms"

The Hungarian hommage is to the composer among whose works the name of the former Kreisler is most familiar....

Are we talking Robert Schumann here? Wot wrote Kreisleriana?

Aha, that will be Kurtág's Hommage a R. Schumann then. I thought the pirouettes were referring to a ballet, but no, the first movement of this piece is titled "Merkwurdige Pirouetten Des Kapellmeisters Johannes Kreisler"

                    Yes? Otherwise it's getting spooky!

                          Quite so! Completing the picture:

Mercia saw it first but if he doesn't want the L, I imagine he wouldn't begrudge you it after some top quality solving

You tried asking that of the Chair of the Public Accounts Committee?
