Just checking - is the fictional Island of Bali Ha'i from O & H's South Pacific the second answer?

"Bali Ha'i" is sung by Bloody Mary to Lt. Joseph Cable. It is the name of a fictional island with two volcanoes where Cable meets Bloody Mary's daughter, Liat. It is to be sung mysteriously, as Bloody Mary is trying to entrance Cable into coming to the island, which is off limits to American service personnel.

sorry, I just picked up on the "but then" in the question which suggested to me some sort of chronological order

I now realise that it is the Rachmaninov Isle of the Dead of 1908 we are talking about - I think Debussy's L'Isle Joyeuse has been discounted

      - great question - still no idea of the rest

I'm struggling. Arthur Bliss was on Desert Island Discs in 1972

Two fires as in fire number 1 and fire number 2.

Island, Isle, île, they'll all do!

Sorry Mercia, I missed your post. That link won't open for me, it just keeps stalling on it. I can still answer your question though. Assuming that there is an opera with that title, then I can say "right title, wrong composer".

Île is in the title. The South Pacific bit is just a snippet of information and is not of primary importance.

Yes. I'm sure Mercia would have come to the same conclusion!

I'll be away for a few hours, I'm sure the rest will soon be solved.

Phew we are going to need one heck of a bowl of coleslaw after all this, I'm not sure where we are and which suggestions are correct so far...
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                              Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."
