    Both correct! The coleslaw:

    Ariadne

    a song in Sondheim's The Frogs;
    features on Naxos in Richard Strauss' opera;
    and helping Theseus (what a cad!) in Birtwistle's;
    a title of a concertante work for oboe and chamber ensemble by Gordon Crosse (who really should feature on the "Neglected Brits etc." Thread.

    Honours all round, but, at hedgehog's request - and if Cali doesn't object - perhaps Oddy has a real B to tax us with ... ?

      Agreed!

      Spicy one for a Sunday night, Mr F
      "...the isle is full of noises,
      Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
      Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
      Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

        Well, I was keeping a low profile, but would have suggested Ariadne statue with crossed legs- poor old Theseus!

        I'm still working on my X clue! So would only go for a B puzzle if pressed!

          Give us something XXX-rated Odders, that'll be just fine!

            My Z clue masterpiece is not quite finished yet, so this is the best I can do for a B at short notice:
            A B to link:
            Hanslick had an acidic tongue, and had something unpleasant to say about this work.
            An approximately new type of music, relying on ancient constructions
            An early piece by a major modern composer.

              wikipedia tells me that Hanslick basically didn't like Wagner, Bruckner and Wolf

              and in particular Lohengrin and Tchaikovsky's violin concerto and 6th symphony

              don't know if the "ancient constructions" are plainsong
              "early piece by a major modern composer" is quite a wide field

                You are correct in regard to Hanslick mercia. A bit more digging around required.

                "ancient" is the correct use of the term - way back before plainsong and really "ancient".

                I am using the word "construction" in a general sense - I don't know if it has a specific musical meaning.

                The modern composer is British.

                  Bother...... that rules out ballad then (medieval term I think).

                    Try ancient Greece - can't get more ancient than that, at least not on this board!

                    And in regard to Hanslick, Tchaik violin concerto is the one in issue.

                      Would I be right in thinking that this B follows rather neatly on from the previous A - as illustrated by Cali?

                        The B word is present in Caliban's painting, but it's not Bacchus, if that is what you had in mind.

                          Bucolic?

                          Has someone written a piece called Bucolic?

                          (know plenty of Pastoral English composers though .)

                          edit:
                          Pity about the Bacchus though - there is a sort of Bacchanale scene on the Venusburg in Tannhäuser, could have scraped in Cage with a Bacchanale, but don't see where that leads with "approximately new music". I can't get these things to gel at all

                            Not bucolic.

                            And by the way, the ancient greek construction is modes - I hope I have not made my clues too oblique!

                              Well, like Edjog, I was thinking of Bacchanale, but evidently not.

                              Now that is intriguing.
