        Hard work indeed mercs!!

Not many Johannes around, I've found in my digging

Let's see how Mr Windgassen fares...
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
        Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

is RM exacting some revenge for a past insult ?

                [if so, I apologise]

                  I couldn't impose on doctor flay to set a question, could I ? [have we finished P ? ]

if not, I shall think [may be some time though ] - Mr Gove wouldn't be impressed by all this googling would he - no substitute for a proper education

No insult at all...but I do admit to supplying the misdirection which hopefully sent all up the garden path looking at Mozart, Verdi and Brahms !

Yes and an overgrown path it was too!! I was looking at Requiems

Then suffered a blow when I discovered Wolfgang Rihm wasn't born till 1952

Another nice testing puzzle and characteristically awesome performance from mercia in solving!

                        I've thought of one

                        what Q was

an early occupier of chair number 29, and dealt operatically with the son of Agenor and (perhaps) the River Thames, as it flows through Oxford

... despite your Oxford allusion, I bet our francophile Caliban will get this

wouldn't our francophile vinteuil like to get it ?
