      Edward Elgar's Enigma Variations:

No 3: RBT - Richard Baxter Townsend (author of A Tenderfoot in Colorado)
No 5: RPA - Richard Penrose Arnold (grandson of the Rugby man, son of the Culture & Anarchy man and an Inspector of Factories)
No 11: GRS: George Robertson Sinclair (successor to Langdon Colbourne as organist at Hereford Cathedral - "his" Variation is actually about his dog, Dan!)

RBT, cattle rancher, gold prospector and apparently Elgar's golf tutor
The research of Professor Amy Barger and former graduate student Ryan Keenan were recently highlighted in a New Scientist article. A press release on the groundbreaking research can be found here.

Just home. Now what's been going on...

"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments

Good heavens. Brilliant question and answer!

I knew George Robertson Sinclair rang a bell.

I realise I have never studied who the various Enigma Variations are about...

Approaching my bedtime, so a couple of extra pointers for the night crew - the F is the surname of the two composers, who also share the same forename (which doesn't begin with "F") - there is also a part-timer with the same name, but he's not as well-known. The "excellent friend" was a poet & playwright.

<doh> the reason these composers share the same name is that they were father and son <doh>

....... assuming I have the correct pair

does Ben Jonson come into the equation ??

Astonishing coincidence(s) aside, I believe so, as you also mention

I believe this is about the Ferrabosco family, but I will happily pass this on to anyone willing to flesh out the details (which I haven't discovered)

[after all I did set the E question]

Well, you did get the Ben Jonson reference.

Fairy Nuff. Any takers? Anyone got a dead cert on the GGs who wants to supply the missing Ferracosco details?
